Phase field modeling and simulation of bio-membranes

Qiang Du
PSU Department of Mathematics

Abstract:

Lipid membranes are interesting subjects of biological studies. In this talk, we report some recent works done by the Penn State groupon the phase field modeling and simulations of the visicle membranedeformation under elastic bending energy and the interaction withbackground fluid flows. Connections are made to the well-knownWillmore problem in differential geometry and the Gamma convergenceof nonlinear functionals in the calculus of variations. We alsodiscuss how to effectively retrieve topological information withinthe phase field framework which may have broad applications.
